How to Choose a Feng Shui Practitioner

Once Feng Shui started becoming popularized in the West, almost immediately it became commercialized into an “easy” form  that removed the customized aspect.  A site is divided into “corners” that represent “love,” “money,” etc.  This is a watered-down third generation catch-all in which the effectiveness of Feng Shui has been lost.

Most importantly this type of Feng Shui practitioner does not use Chinese Zodiac Five Elements profile and Destiny Reading that provide unique solutions for the client.  This omission can result in a negative outcome.  For instance: Red is an auspicious color generally, however if a client has too much Fire Element to begin with, surrounding them with red in their environment is figuratively pouring gasoline on a fire. In this situation the negative effects of fire would be increased, resulting in more arguments and strife in the environment – obviously not a good outcome!

How can a person find a Feng Shui practitioner that is right for them?

  1. Research the background of the practitioner – have they gone through a solid, authentic training taught by a credible Feng Shui Master who practices the authentic form of Chinese Feng Shui?  More importantly, the consultant should have a good track record over many years – and the Master must have a good track record and be credible in his authenticity and integrity.
  2. To ensure that the endorsements of the Feng Shui practitioner are credible verify to be sure they are not fabrications by checking referrals, or press/media archives in the case of high-profile projects.
  3. Make sure the practitioner creates a Five Elements and Destiny Profile of each client and studies the Earth Element (Solar and Chi) variation of each location.

The authentic form of Feng Shui has a 5,000-year history, with solidly documented written theory and practice dating back over 3,200 years. A Feng Shui practitioner who has been trained appropriately by a Feng Shui master has knowledge and experience of these texts, especially if he or she reads Chinese, as most of these texts have not been translated.  It’s not just a question of authenticity for its own sake: incorrect prescriptions can result in a worse outcome than doing nothing.  So if you are looking for a Feng Shui practitioner please do your homework first – you owe it to yourself.

Finally, Feng Shui is more than just decluttering or interior design (both of which have merit on their own, of course).  The authentic form of Feng Shui by a real master will heighten your awareness in a way that complements the Feng Shui balancing.  This is a holistic and comprehensive approach to adjusting all the energy factors in your life.  A real consultant can also guide you to create better relationships with people in your life.  Knowledge is power, and having the right Master empowers you with practical approaches to smooth your path.

My Philosophy on Apprenticeship

Classical 5-Elements Feng Shui Luo Pan Compass

Lately I have heard from several people that they have hired Feng Shui consultants who advertise themselves as being trained by me, only to be disappointed.  Unfortunately they only checked their bona fides with me after paying and being dissatisfied with the work.  In a similar vein, frequently I receive emails from people asking me to train them, or to teach a course.  The answer is categorically no. While I do not want to be the last of the Tin Sun Lineage, when I do take an apprentice it will not be a stranger who emails me a request. I will choose an apprentice in the traditional way, and the apprenticeship will be of long duration as there is much to learn of Feng Shui Five Elements, Chinese Zodiac, philosophical and scientific texts and life.

Certainly, it has always been a possibility for me, with my high profile, to start a school and train hundreds or even thousands of people. However, this is not the way knowledge is passed down in my lineage for the very simple reason that what needs to be taught cannot be done in a simple course of even 500 or 1,000 hours. Most of the popularized feng shui available to American consumers is of a simplistic variety with rooms divided into sectors and common-sense ideas like ‘declutter’ emphasized. However, the true Feng Shui must incorporate the Five Elements and Destiny Profile of the individuals involved, in conjunction with the Earth Element (solar and chi) variation of each location. Balancing people’s consciousness with the Earth Energy is the only way that the true purpose of Feng Shui can be accomplished.

Many of my loyal long-term clients tried other feng shui practitioners first so they had a context within which to judge what I do, and the feedback I have from them does not surprise me. The authentic form of Feng Shui by a real master not only balances the energies of the client’s environment but also heightens the client’s awareness – a comprehensive approach to the whole life and/or business of the client. Anything less is just interior design – which is important on its own terms but it is not Feng Shui.

Thank you for reading this post. It is important to disseminate the information that I do not do trainings or have any apprentices to date. I am not responsible for people of low morality who use my name completely unauthorized. Do your homework and research before deciding on a Feng Shui Master. My next post will be a checklist for Feng Shui clients looking for a Master or practitioner.
